POST: A special sequence of bits that determine if the packet is being sent to its network. A subnet mask is a screen of numbers used for routing traffic within a subnet. Once a packet has arrived at an organization's gateway or connection point with its uniquenetwork number, it can be routed to its destination within the organization's internal gateways using the subnet number.
An IP address consists of both a network number and a host number (i.e., the number of a host on the given network). The subnet mask tells you which portion is thenetwork which requires an understanding of the binary representation of the decimal values. The remainder of the IP address is the host number.
